How to Create an ACH Payment Method in Stripe Billing

Learn how to quickly create an ACH payment method in Stripe Billing. This simple workaround ensures your customer can pay via ACH, even if no payment method is on file.

The Problem

It happens frequently: you create an invoice in Stripe or Stripe Billing for a customer, but the Inbound ACH Payment Method hasn’t been created. This often occurs when you have “Default Payment Method on File” but no actual payment method exists.

Stripe Support indicates this situation is unfortunate but unavoidable — you must wait until the customer renews, at which point an ACH payment method will auto-generate. However, there’s a faster solution.

Solution: Creating an ACH Payment Method in Seconds

Step 1: Generate a Draft Invoice

1. Go to the Stripe Customer
2. Click Actions > Create Invoice
3. Immediately close the invoice without saving (click the X in the upper left)
4. Go to the newly created Draft Invoice, click the 3 dots on the right
5. Delete the Draft Invoice

That’s it! You should now have an Inbound ACH Payment method.

Accessing Bank Account Details

Your customer doesn’t automatically know the bank account details. Even re-downloading the existing invoice won’t display payment information. Only future-generated invoices will show bank details.

To retrieve the ACH Payment details manually:

1. Go to the Payment Methods section of the customer in Stripe
2. Click on the ”>” by ACH Credit Transfer
3. Click on the ID (appearing as src_abcd1234abcd1234...)
4. Scroll down the ACH Credit Transfer page
5. Copy and paste the bank details and provide them to your customer
