Surfacing Xero Data in AI Assistants
Xero has one official AI assistant connector as of September 2026, and it is read-only and summary-level. What works today, what does not, and the options for each assistant.

As of September 2026, Xero has exactly one official AI assistant connector, and it reaches a narrower slice of your books than most people expect.

That matters because of who is actually asking. Xero does not charge per user, so cost is not what keeps people out of the books. The role model is.
Xero roles control which parts of Xero you can open, not which records you see once you are in. That leaves two bad options for someone who just needs a number.

Xero describes Viewer as suiting “company directors, trustees, auditors and liquidators,” which is a fair description of who should see all of that.
What nobody can have is the obvious thing: see whether an invoice was paid, change nothing. So the account manager chasing that payment asks someone in finance and waits. An AI assistant that can read the books removes the wait, but only for the questions it is wired to answer.
What Xero has officially shipped
Xero announced its Claude integration on May 12, 2026, building on a multi-year partnership with Anthropic announced in late March. It is a genuine first-party integration, not a community project: Xero maintains a dedicated product page for it, and Xero’s own in-product agent, JAX (Just Ask Xero), runs on Claude under the same partnership.
Setup takes a couple of minutes. You open the connectors directory in Claude, find Xero, sign in, and pick an organization. Xero’s pitch is “no developer setup or API work,” and it is free to add. You need an active Xero subscription and a Claude account, free or paid.
Xero said in August 2026 that thousands of customers use the integration every day, and that usage of its MCP server grew tenfold between December 2025 and May 2026, passing a million API calls by June.
It is strictly read-only, or in Xero’s more careful phrasing, read-only “at launch.” Claude “can only read your live data to answer a question, it cannot change it.” Nothing gets edited, posted, or reconciled through it.
Three limits worth knowing before you rely on it
1. Summary figures only. The connector exposes five tools and no more: cash position, contacts and receivables, financial position, profit and loss, and top customers by revenue. That list has not grown since launch, and it draws a hard line through the questions people actually ask.

The first three are Xero’s own example questions. The last three fail for the same reason: there is no invoice detail and no transaction-level data behind the five tools. 2. One organization at a time. The connection points at a single Xero organization, and switching to another means disconnecting and reconnecting. If you run a holding company above a trading entity, or you are a bookkeeper with several clients’ books, that is friction on every question. That is Xero’s connection model rather than an Anthropic choice: a Xero Custom Connection is scoped to one organization by design, while a full OAuth app can reach several.
3. Nothing fires on its own. The connector answers when you ask. No Xero event triggers it, so there is no “tell me when this invoice goes overdue.” It is a lookup tool, not a monitor.
None of this makes it a bad product. For a business owner with one entity who wants to check cash and profit in plain English, it is genuinely good and it costs nothing. It is aimed at that person, not at a team.
ChatGPT: announced, not shipped
At Xerocon in Denver on August 24, 2026, Xero CEO Sukhinder Singh Cassidy announced that Xero would integrate with OpenAI, covering both ChatGPT and Codex, alongside deeper Microsoft 365 work. A Xero spokesperson put the timing at “in the coming weeks.”
Xero repeated the commitment in August 2026, saying a ChatGPT connector “will be made available across Chat, Work and Codex.” Future tense, both times. As of September 2026 it has not landed, and there is no official Xero app in ChatGPT’s directory. Until there is, the routes are a self-hosted bridge to Xero’s developer-facing MCP server, a general iPaaS such as Zapier or Workato, or a hosted MCP provider. Gemini: nothing official
Google and Xero have announced nothing: no partnership, no directory entry, and no mention in the Xerocon coverage.
Everything connecting the two is third-party plumbing: Zapier and Workato recipes, CData’s drivers, or Google Cloud’s Integration Connectors, which expose the Xero schemas but leave you to supply OAuth credentials and build the rest. Those work, but they are integration projects rather than a connector you switch on. Getting Xero data in Gemini through a hosted MCP layer is the shorter path.

Xero’s official Claude connector. Free, first-party, read-only, two minutes to set up. Best for a single-entity owner or operator who wants headline numbers and nothing deeper.
Xero’s official MCP server, self-hosted. Open source and developer-facing. You run it, you own the OAuth flow, the token storage, and the hosting. Best for teams with an engineer who wants full control and does not mind the maintenance.
A general-purpose iPaaS. Zapier, Workato, CData, Google Cloud Integration Connectors. Broad and flexible, and you configure and maintain every workflow. Best if you already run one of these platforms for other automations.
A hosted MCP layer such as Kipper. Kipper is a separate product built by the same team as Breadwinner. It connects Xero to Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini through a hosted MCP server, plus Slack, Teams, and SMS, so the person asking needs no Xero login, and no access to the rest of the ledger to get one answer.
